Raphy Sarkissian is an independent scholar and art advisor, whose recent writings on art include essays for exhibition catalogues, monographs and exhibition reviews.

After experimenting with photography in Milan and matriculating at the International Center of Photography in New York, Sarkissian pursued fine arts at New York University, studying under Judith Barry, Peter Campus and Roselee Goldberg.

Soon after completing his Master of Arts at New York University, he advanced his studies of art history at Columbia University and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York.

He has taught at New Paltz State University of New York and Pace University and is currently affiliated with the School of Visual Arts in New York.

Sarkissian’s recent exhibition reviews have appeared in The Brooklyn Rail, where he has written on the works of Mai Blanco, Sean Scully, Isca Greenfield-Sanders, Liliane Tomasko, and Anish Kapoor. His most recent catalogue essay, “Liliane Tomasko: A Forest of Signs,” was published in 2024 for an exhibition at Kerlin Gallery in Dublin. In 2022 Hatje Cantz published his essay for the monograph Sean Scully: Material World, accompanying the exhibition at the Thorvaldsen Museum in Copenhagen.
